Couple Provides Lead Gift to Merten Scholars Endowment
By Corey Jenkins Schaut
Alumna Lucy Church, BIS ’81 and MPA ’86, and her husband, Randolph, have made a $25,000 gift to the Merten Scholars Endowment, the fund’s largest gift to date. The couple serves as the co-chairs of the campaign to honor Alan and Sally Merten.
“The Merten Scholars will help attract top students to Mason,” said Marc Broderick, vice president of university development and alumni affairs. “Ranny and Lucy recognize this is critical to the university’s future.”
The Churches are both past members of the George Mason University Foundation Board of Trustees. Mr. Church was a former rector of Mason’s Board of Visitors, the founding president of the Fall for the Book Festival, and a member of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences advisory board. Mrs. Church was the founding chair of the Women’s Advisory Board and a member of the Arts at Mason board. They are long-standing arts patrons and avid Mason basketball fans.
“We have been fortunate to get to know Alan and Sally over the years,” said Mr. Church. “We believe the Merten Scholars is a fitting tribute to their leadership, and we are pleased to be able to help lead this effort to honor them.”
Donors to Mason for 30 years, the Churches have established two endowed scholarship funds and contribute to other scholarships, the arts, and athletics.
