Krasnow Institute for Advanced Study

A Message from the Director

When the Krasnow Institute for Advanced Study was established in 1990 through the generosity of Shelley Krasnow, a new leaf was turned on the path to understanding the human mind. Today, the institute prides itself on its work and its people, whose scientific inquiry seeks to better the lives of millions through an understanding of the intersection between the mind, the brain, and cognition.

The Krasnow Institute is committed to aggressively moving forward by expanding laboratory space to allow for additional scientists. The addition of a brain imaging center—one of only three on-campus fMRI research facilities in the nation—has further elevated the institute's status.

We are tremendously excited by the momentum at Krasnow; however, we can only sustain that momentum with the generous support of our friends. Every gift, no matter the size, makes a difference. Just as the institute itself was founded through a generous act of philanthropy, we hope that you will join us in being a part of something great.

The institute’s immediate needs include

  • Current use and endowed support for graduate student fellowships to recruit and retain the best and brightest graduate students.

  • Current use and endowed faculty support to support the work of the various research teams at Krasnow and their highly specialized scientific inquiry.

  • Operational support to advance the institute as a whole and provide the necessary resources to advance scientific research.

Gifts to the George Mason University Foundation in support of Krasnow can be made securely online or through a variety of other giving vehicles. Many memorial and living tribute opportunities are available in addition to the naming of specific facilities. For more information, please contact Rick Virgin at 703-993-8647.

By supporting the Krasnow Institute for Advanced Study, you help advance essential scientific inquiry that may one day help us better understand the mysteries of the human mind.

James Olds, PhD
